Job descriptions for computer and network technicians

(BT)Bench tech – computers brought in and fixed, hardware technician. Need basic computer assembly skills, motherboard, processor, and RAM compatibility skills. Some research on how to find driver skills.

(FT)Field tech – On site service hardware technician. Need basic computer assembly skills, motherboard, processor, and RAM compatibility skills. Some research on how to find driver skills. Internet access and networking skills and basic routing skills. Remote access skills for RDP, PCAW, VNC, logmein, gotomypc, dyndns and more.

(FE)Field engineer – On site service hardware/software technician. Need advanced computer assembly skills, motherboard, processor, and RAM compatibility skills, RAID knowledge. Some research on how to find driver skills. Internet access and advanced networking skills and advanced routing skills. Server recovery from backups, backup designer, Microsoft exchange recovery, understanding of VPN access technology. Need understanding of server and workstation domain relationships.

(IE)Infrastructure engineer - On site service infrastructure technician. This is usually involving Cisco equipment and the likeness, Checkpoint firewall, and other non-SOHO technology. Understanding of site to site VPNs and client to site VPNs, encryption types, certificates, DNS, web, email connectivity.

(HD)Help Desk – In a call center, data center, network operations center, this is the person that answers the phone and is mostly remote technical support. This person is only as good as they are able to connect or troubleshoot over the phone. If they reach the limitation of remote support, they resort to a FE or FT to take over. This is the 98% of all support required.

(PE)Programming Expert -This person writes programs. They are useful when the off the shelf programs you buy cannot do the job you need as a business. They are generally a blank check until the project is complete. Their job is difficult. Their job is nearly impossible when they have to figure out what another PE has created that is either dead or gone.

(ITA)Information Technology Administrator – This person is needed on the day your computer support costs more than hiring a person full time to get the job done. They wear all of the hats of the other jobs and sometimes has to hire some of the others to get it all done in a timely fashion.
